Fireworks exploding over the Hocking River, red-white-and-blue streamers on old-fashioned cars parading down Court Street and patriotic railroad tours will set the tone for this Fourth of July holiday in Athens County.

Fourth of July festivities begin today with the Boomsday Car Show at the University Mall Parking lot from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is free, and all proceeds from the event will benefit the Athens County Food Pantry.

A fireworks show is scheduled for 10 later that night. The showâ€

With fewer Ohio University students on campus during summer sessions, Athens is definitely a different place. That goes for the bars too.

“It’s a lot more laid back,” said Garrett Epure, bartender at Red Brick Tavern, 14 N. Court St. “It’s more of a regular crowd than a huge crowd.”

But some bars have been experiencing steady business despite most people being gone for the summer.

For seven years, Jaime and Tim Rice have spanned the country in search of vertical landscapes to conquer. And now they are looking for something different. 

The couple owns and operates Solutions Rock Gym, Athens’ first indoor rock climbing gym, located at 24 E. State St., which opened in May. The idea of bringing indoor rock climbing to the Athens area and its “well established climbing community” made sense, Jaime Rice said.

Perhaps the happiest person at Faculty Senate meetings couldn’t care less about curriculum or the University System of Ohio. He’s more interested in dragons.

“I spend most of my time reading books about dragons and watching movies about dragons,” said seven-year-old Fisher McDiarmid, the youngest Faculty Senate attendee.

Fisher goes to senate meetings with his father, Duane McDiarmid, a representative for the College of Fine Arts.

Tonight when the Ohio University National Pan-Hellenic Council presents the annual Greek Step Show, students will get a chance to look at stepping beyond what they see at the movies.
