Web site offers free music to help indie filmmakers

Published: Wednesday, September 19, 2007

MobyGratis.com, an online music download site, is a new initiative to provide free music to independent filmmakers.

Created by singer/songwriter Moby, the Web site has an extensive library of unreleased songs, which will continue to grow as the project moves forward. All of the music is available for free so long as it is used in a nonprofit context.

Moby produced the site because his friends, who were indie filmmakers, were complaining about the hassle of having to license music for low-budget films. His goal is to provide free music for independent, experimental and nonprofit filmmakers, according to the site.

Moby hopes that his site this will enable filmmakers to spend their time making films and not calling up record companies trying to license music.

Those looking to use the site for commercial use will be charged a fee that will be donated to the Humane Society.
