A Coolville man who was arrested for allegedly stabbing his ex-wife in the chest with a pair of scissors and burning down his own house will appear in court June 5, facing charges of aggravated arson and felonious assault.
Michael R. Smith, 51, of 2738 Baker St., will appear in the Athens County Common Pleas Court if a grand jury finds that there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial, Athens County Prosecutor C. David Warren said.
Officers from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office arrested Smith May 26, Sheriff Vern Castle said.
When officers arrived at Smith’s house following a 911 call, they found Smith sitting in front of his burning house in a lawn chair, according to a police report. Smith’s ex-wife, Jannen, and their 14-year-old son were at a neighbor’s house, according to the report.
It is unclear whether Janeen Smith also lived at the house, which was destroyed in the fire, a Sheriff’s Office employee said.
Janeen Smith was treated by Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Service, Castle said, adding that the son was not injured.
Smith was arrested after his ex-wife told officers what had happened, and officers are in the final stages of investigating the incident, Castle said.
“There wasn’t much dispute (about what happened),” he said. “By the time I was called, it was pretty much wrapped up.”
Smith is being held in the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail on a $200,000 bond.
