Acting warden at jail receives pay raise

Published: Thursday, April 26, 2007

The Southeast Ohio Regional Jail’s Board of Commissioners approved a pay increase of nearly $10,000 for the acting warden in a 5-4 vote yesterday.

Jeremy Tolson’s salary increased from $45,423 to $54,075 and his benefits package will not be affected. The pay raise will take effect May 11.

“A higher position deserves higher pay, and (Tolson) is one of the top five in regional jail experience in the state,” said board member Bill Theisen, Athens County Commissioner, who voted for the increase. Jill Thompson, board president and Athens County auditor, voted for the raise to break the tie.

Although the pay increase does not make him warden, Tolson said he has “full intentions of applying for the warden’s position.” The board could vote on his employment proposal at the next meeting May 30.

Morgan County Sheriff Tom Jenkins, Athens County Sheriff Vern Castle, Morgan County Commissioner Dean Cain and Hocking County Commissioner Gary Starner voted against the pay raise.
