OUPD investigates alleged rape in dorm

An Ohio University student reported she was sexually assaulted Sunday in her room on East Green, according to an OU police report.

The alleged rape was alcohol related and committed by an acquaintance at about 8 a.m. Sunday, according to the report.

University police declined to comment on the assault because officers are still investigating, said Sgt. John Stabler.

Students should report attempted or actual sexual assault immediately to either police or a hospital to get a rape kit, said Amy Nessley, the sexual assault survivor advocacy coordinator for Hocking, Athens and Vinton counties.

Rape kits administered by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital and Hudson Health Center can test samples of hair and dirt underneath fingernails, photograph bruising and provide medicine for sexually transmitted diseases, she said.

Nessley also offers counseling for rape victims, including personal help and support groups, she said.

Most rapes are committed by acquaintances, Nessley said.

She also advised not leaving drinks unattended at parties or going to bars alone.

Is it just me, or does "Rape Kit" sound like something they give to the rapist, not the victim?

Anyone who commits a crime like this should be expelled and brought up on charges. Period.

Whomever said otherwise?

Not every comment needs to be an argument, complaint or debate, Kevin.

Just so that everyone is clear on what a rape kit is I thought I would let everyone know. it is a very important tool for a rape victim and could potentially help their case along if he/she decides to press charges. A rape kit is essentially an exam performed by a SANE nurse (sexual assault nurse examiner) at O'Blenness. This exam collects evidence from the crime scene, the victims body. They take pictures, collect samples, take your clothes, check for injuries etc. All of this is extremely helpful to the victim if they go to court. The procedure is very uncomfortable because it can feel like being violated over again. It is important for the victim to not shower, brush their teeth, change their clothes, urinate or defecate before the exam because they could lose evidence. This is a good thing for all men and women to be aware of on campus because you never know when you or someone you know may be sexually assaulted.
