Some students think they're funny. Some students use their humor to impress people at parties. Some even hone their skills at Uptown comedy nights. But only the truly brave and foolish attempt to kill the Front Room crowds in Mel Helitzer's Comedy Class final.
This annual show will be held at the Front Room tonight at 8 p.m. Students are graded on the amount of applause they receive from the audience."I'm using some new material and some stuff I did for Dad's Weekend (opening for Mark Anthony)," Nicky Margolis, senior humor-writing student, said.
But stand-up is not a game that only college students play. OU English teacher Susan Sheridan, a familiar open stage night cut-up, will trim her 15-minute routine to a lean 5 minutes.
"I'm too old for stand-up but I can't do sit-down," Sheridan said. Sheridan and Hocking College administrative assistant Karen Elliott are two non-students enrolled in comedy writing.
"I did not sleep last night at all (Tuesday)," Sheridan said. "Sometimes I wonder 'why do I do this to myself?' There are not other people my age doing this!"
Mel Helitzer's Comedy Class is tonight. in the Front Room. Tickets cost $3 at the door.
