65 vehicles pile up after two-car crash

WAYNESBORO, Va. (AP) - A two-car accident in heavy fog on a mountain highway Sunday was the start of a chain reaction of fender benders involving 65 vehicles.

No one was killed but 40 people were treated at area hospitals for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, state police Capt. Howard Gregory said.

The accident that started it all happened shortly before 1 p.m. on Interstate 64 atop Afton Mountain, about 95 miles west of Richmond. Cars slammed into the mess for about 20 minutes before police arrived.

''It was a melee,'' said Bobby Hutchens, a tow truck driver who arrived on the scene. ''There were three tractor trailers all over the road and cars sitting on top of cars.''

Police used two school buses to transport the injured.

Stavros Kalfoglou, 19, of Richmond, said he was driving along when he suddenly saw brake lights ahead. He tried to drive to pull over but was rear-ended.

''I'm really shaken up,'' he said. ''My car is not in any way, shape or form driveable.''

Afton Mountain, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, has been the site of frequent accidents in the past.
