Different offense for Green and White game

When Ohio takes the field for the Green and White game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Peden Stadium, fans might not recognize their team. No, there won't be too many unfamiliar faces at the spring practice finale - just an unfamiliar offensive attack.

Sure, the triple option will still be a big part of the game and Kareem Wilson will still be carrying the ball, but there will be new field generals. Senior Mike Orlando and sophomore Tony Macon will lead the team from under center, with Wilson coming through the line from the halfback position.

"I like (halfback) better," Wilson said. "I can use my sight a lot more. When I was at quarterback, I sometimes had to keep from using my sight."

Head coach Jim Grobe said Wilson looks good out of the backfield.

"He's doing well," Grobe said. "There's a lot of competition there. We've got three good running backs with Kareem, Jamel Patterson and Rayna'ld Ray. It's a horse race back there."

Quarterback candidate Orlando said Wilson "fits well" in the backfield.

"He's a hard runner, and he's hard to bring down,"Orlando said. "He's got the physique to be a running back."

The other major difference the fans will notice is that the ball will be in the air. With the strong arms of Orlando and Macon, Grobe said you could see quite a bit of passing.

"We're splitting our coaching staff between the teams," Grobe said. "They're going to do whatever they want. If they want to throw the ball 40 times, that's fine."

"Mike (Orlando) is doing all right. He's not playing as consistently as I would hope for an older guy, but I'm pleased with his effort this spring. Tony (Macon) has a sprained right foot. Hopefully he'll be able to play."

Macon has no doubt that he's going to play.

"I'm going be in there," Macon said.

For good reason, Macon is excited about the competition at quarterback.

"You know, it's whoever does best gets the start," he said. "I love the competition."

But if Macon does go down, you may see Wilson take a few steps forward to take the snap. Wilson played a series at quarterback in Wednesday's practice.

"Kareem took a couple of snaps today for the first time this spring," Grobe said. "We've stuck him at running back and will try not to use him at quarterback unless we have to."

Wilson cringed at the suggestion of taking snaps on Sunday.

"For my sake, I hope I don't have to," Wilson said smiling. "I'll be lost with all the new stuff they've put in."

Orlando said this spring has been a hectic one, but it has been good to get out and have some fun. He said the new offense has kept it interesting.

"It's always good to get outside and play," Orlando said. "It's the same basic offense, but with some new wrinkles. We're trying out a new "I" set. You'll see some balls in the air. It's not going to be so monotonous, which I think was a problem last year, especially against Miami and Marshall. We're trying to mix things up."
