Submarine sandwich shop to surface on West Union
by Kristen Paladino/ FOR THE POST

A Meigs County man and his family are opening another submarine sandwich shop in Athens.

Father and son Jim and Adam Sheets, of Pomeroy, are bringing a W.G. Grinders to 120 W. Union St. The new submarine sandwich shop, which will open Oct. 10, offers students and locals another dining option among the common Court Street selection.

Adam and his father are the primary operators of the Athens store but five other family members also are involved.

The family had been looking to open a business and decided on Grinders after dining at one of the Columbus locations, he said.

"The food was really good and my brother said that we had to open one in Athens before someone else did," Adam said. "There aren't a lot of choices when it comes to eating in Athens. Athens needs a Grinders."

Adam said he feels the cooperation and support of the corporate headquarters made opening the business a little easier.

"It's a really good franchise with a lot of support from corporate; the founder has even stopped down to check things out a few times," he said.

Grinders began franchising in 1994, Adam said. The first Grinders was opened on the Ohio State University campus in 1989, he said.

The restaurant's menu includes 22 oven-baked sandwiches, including reubens and veggie subs, all of which are prepared fresh daily.

Grinders also offers a variety of deli salads, including bowtie pasta salad and redskin potato salad also prepared daily. Soups, cappuccino, desserts and bottled beer also will be offered.

Some area competitors say they are not too concerned about the addition of another sub shop to the area.

"It may hurt business a little, but we are on Court Street, right Uptown and close to everything," said Melissa Garber, an employee at Subway, 25 N. Court St. "I think that our location is better."

Sophomore Emily Dilworth said she is looking forward to the new restaurant.

"It will be a good change from the basic choice of bagels, pizza and fast food that we have become accustomed to," she said.
