Campus Escort improves service

With the addition of a new van, long waits to use the Campus Escort Services soon might be a thing of the past.
Mark Matthews, assistant director of the Campus Safety Department, said the van will be used for both the daytime Catcab program, which transports injured or handicapped students to and from class, and the night escort service, which shuttles students to and from campus. No Ohio laws require universities to have such services, he said.
Strickland: Bill stops education spending

A proposal to block grant federal education spending might not be a wise choice for Ohioans, according to the Ohio Department of Education.
House Resolution 3248, also known as the "Dollars to the Classroom Act," is a block grant to answer the Ohio Supreme Court's 1997 ruling in DeRolph vs. the State of Ohio declaring the state's school funding system inadequate and unconstitutional.
Hurricane Georges plows into Gulf

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Hurricane Georges plowed into the Gulf Coast yesterday and then parked there, weakening to a tropical storm but pouring rain at an inch-an-hour pace for what could be a long and ruinous stay.
Winds dropped to just over 69 mph, six mph below hurricane strength and down from a high of 110. New Orleans was spared the catastrophic direct hit that many in the Big Easy had feared.
Student Senate hopes to aid off-campus housing search hed: Students tire searching for off-campus housing

To assist students in the quest for off-campus housing, Ohio University Student Senate will hold two housing forums, Student Senate President Darien Moss said.
The forums are open to all students who want to learn about the city's services and the responsibilities that go along with living in Athens.

Sponsored by the Rainbow/Push Coalition and Hocking College, the event united politicians, bankers, business owners and entrepreneurs in a discussion about obtaining capital for the Appalachian region.
Program gives new teachers feedback on classroom tactics

The first year in a classroom can be intimidating for many new teachers, but the Ohio Department of Education is trying to make the first year of teaching a little easier.
The department of education awarded two grants to Ohio University this year for programs to give new teachers maximum feedback on their teaching methods, said Associate Professor of Teacher Education Joan Safran.
Sexual health service options now available to OU students

In the rural town of Athens where choices are sometimes not an option, Ohio University students get the chance to decide between sexual health services at Hudson Health Center and Planned Parenthood.
Along with offering reproductive health services, both clinics have sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment, emergency contraception, educational seminars and a variety of other benefits to offer students.
Submarine sandwich shop to surface on West Union

A Meigs County man and his family are opening another submarine sandwich shop in Athens.
Father and son Jim and Adam Sheets, of Pomeroy, are bringing a W.G. Grinders to 120 W. Union St. The new submarine sandwich shop, which will open Oct. 10, offers students and locals another dining option among the common Court Street selection.
