THE POST

Athens, Ohio * An Independent Daily Newspaper * Ohio University

A silent protest

Editor,

When I decided to move back into the residence halls this year, it was only because I needed a worry-free place to complete my last two quarters before I put on that robe and receive my diploma.

I am a 23-year-old senior at Ohio University and have spent the past five years receiving a top-rate education from this fine university. I lived off campus for the past two years, but I decided not to sign a lease this year since I will be leaving Athens after Winter Quarter. I moved into Brough House, a 21-and-over hall where I have been treated in a very respectable, adult-like manner. I have had no major complaints about moving back on campus until I became aware of the Halloween policies this year.

I have no problem with the university's desire to lower the number of out-of-town visitors Halloween weekend. Its one-guest limit and parking policies appear a bit strict, but I understand why these policies were implemented. The administration is just trying to prevent overcrowdedness and safety violations.

But when I read that we were going to have to wear "hospital-like" ID wristbands, I bursted out into such a laughter that I almost choked on my sandwich. How dare they make us walk with wristbands like a bunch of kindergartners on a field trip to the zoo? I live here by right. I pay the board fees. I am a respectable adult, not a dog in a kennel! I am a student of OU, NOT property of OU. I don't need a label. The residence life staff can easily look at my student ID and compare it to their list of residents. Then they know I belong here, and I wouldn't have to wear a degrading hospital band in order to get into my own home.

When I refuse to wear my hospital band Halloween weekend it will not be out of any disrespect for OU. It will be in protest of my basic rights being violated. I have a tremendous amount of respect for OU and am proud to be a Bobcat. It would be very honorable for OU to give me this same respect in return.

An old argument
Editor,

In response to the turnstile, "OU is not a police state," Oct. 16, just a few words: Get over it.

There is no basis for comparing a college to a government. Although it is a state-sponsored institution, Ohio University does not exercise authority over us like a militant dictatorship. The rules and regulations it makes are its prerogative as a provider of a service. If you don't like it, no one is asking you to stay.

The old saying comes to mind that what is right isn't always popular, and what is popular isn't always right. The administration is doing what it thinks is right, even in the face of vast student opposition. I applaud them for doing so.

A needed clarification
Editor,

On Oct. 9, The Post published a letter titled "Checking options." Unfortunately, it contained some very wrong conclusions which the staff of the Athens Crisis Pregnancy Center wishes to correct. We do not advertise on billboards; those which were alluded to were purchased by CareNet which is not a part of the ACPC.

Also, we DO NOT advertise ourselves as a health care provider. The free pregnancy tests we offer are done by the client themselves. We use no pictures nor are clients forced to watch videos nor view graphic pictures. Our mission is to assist women who are in a crisis pregnancy situation NO MATTER what decision they may make. We do believe that life begins at conception and have never tried to hide that, but we do care about women and offer counseling and community support services to them. We encourage anyone interested in our services to tour our center located at 50 S. Court St. Suite B.
