Halloween safety concern for greeks

With Halloween around the corner, sorority and fraternity chapter houses will be stepping up the rules.

"We will be a little more risk-management oriented this weekend," Acacia fraternity president Michael Maybaum said. "We are making sure that the guys take care of their guests."

In sorority houses, typically, alcohol is not allowed and male guests are prohibited in the upper part of the house. House doors are locked at all times with combination lock codes only residents know.

Fraternity houses tend to have more open rules, said Carole Cox, assistant director of greek and student activities.

While specific rules vary by chapter, Maybaum said rules that normally are overlooked will be enforced more strictly. Acacia members have been advised against certain activities, such as drawing attention to the house with loud music.

Alpha Omicron Pi sorority president Amy Spolrich said on most occasions, members must tell their house mother a guest will be staying in the house.

"For Halloween, we are restricted to one guest, and they must be registered," Spolrich said.

Alpha Omicron Pi also is hiring additional security. Spolrich said they will hire one or two to help watch doors and check in guests.

Cox said the greek community realizes the number of outside visitors who will be coming in this weekend possibly could affect their houses.

"They will tend to keep things locked up more," she said.

Anez Windland, Alpha Gamma Delta sorority house director, said members have been warned to be careful and stay out of trouble. They also have been told they are responsible for any actions of their guests.

"If their guest gets in trouble, they get in trouble," Windland said.

However, she said there shouldn't be many problems with members or their guests.

"I don't think we are having many people in this weekend," Windland said. "Many of the girls are leaving to get away from it all."
