Ohio's first-ever women's soccer season came to an end Friday in DeKalb, Ill., as the Bobcats dropped a 2-1 game to No. 1 Northern Illinois in the semifinals of the inaugural four-team Mid-American Conference Tournament.
On the momentum of their victory over the Bobcats, the Huskies defeated Eastern Michigan in yesterday's championship game 3-2 in overtime.
For No. 4 seed Ohio it was the first loss since the Huskies won 2-0 Oct. 5, in Athens. After the first loss, Ohio went on a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2).
"Northern played a really good game," Ohio forward Corrie Mazurk said. "They were definitely prepared for us because the first time we played I think they found out that we could play up with them."
The veteran Huskie team took it to the Bobcats early in the game, scoring its two goals in the first half. On Northern's second goal, Mucci crossed the ball to the MAC's leading
goal scorer Allison Wade, who headed it in at the 40:30 mark.
Ohio got on the board in the second half, as the MAC's second leading goal scorer Mindy Boggs put one past Northern's Julie Bergstrom 57 seconds into the half.
The Huskies pitched a shutout the rest of the way.
In the championship game, Wade, who scored Northern Illinois' second goal, netted the championship goal at 98:21 of the match. Wade headed in a pass from Corbin past Eagle goalie Erin Norton.
