Swimmers run into tough competition at UK
compiled from staff reports THE POST

The Ohio men's and women's swimming and diving teams learned some lessons when they traveled to Lexington, Ky., Saturday for a tri-meet - namely what it takes to be a great team.

With All-American swimmers competing, both teams were swept in the three individual dual meets.

The men lost to Kentucky 188-53, to Ohio State 187-54 and to Miami (Fla.) 194-48. The women were defeated by Kentucky 164.5-72.5, by Ohio State 134-109 and by Miami (Fla.) 137-106.

The women's record moved to 3-3 while the men dropped to 2-3.

"There were some national champion swimmers wa lking around on the deck," coach Greg Werner said. "That's exactly why we scheduled this, so we could get prepared for the conference schedule and NCAA's."

Though neither team won an individual event, sophomore Hollie Bonewit finished second with a personal best time of two minutes, 21.50 seconds in the 200 breaststroke. Stephanie Gutschall finished second in the 50 freestyle.

On the men's side, Curt Hanover finished third in the 100 breaststroke while Doug Grebe finished 5th in the 1000 freestyle.

Volleyball drops another match

The Ohio volleyball team lost to Marshall Friday at The Convo, dropping its record to 7-21 overall, 1-12 in the Mid-American Conference.

After losing the first two games 15-9 and 15-10, the Bobcats looked to be back on track for the third game, leading 14-10. But Ohio didn't score another point for the rest of the match, as the Thundering Herd rallied off six unanswered points to win the game 16-14 and the match 3-0.

Laura Cressa led Ohio with 13 kills, 10 digs, two service aces and three blocks assisted. Traci Nation also posted 13 kills.

Marshall's Alisha Bable led the team with 24 kills, a .477 hitting percentage and 13 digs.

With a new defense on the court, the Bobcats notched comparable 54 digs to Marshall's 56, but only posted 47 kills to the Herd's 58.

Two titles won in open meet

Two Ohio wrestlers won their weight class at the West Virginia Open Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.

Senior Shawn Enright won the 134-pound weight class and All-American senior Dwight Gardner won at 167 pounds.

Placing out of the top four but winning four matches and advancing to the quarterfinals were junior Brad Wright at 126 pounds and sophomore Michael Waskiewicz at 150 pounds.

Interim coach Joel Greenlee considered Ohio's performance passable.

"We're not satisfied, but we're happy," Greenlee said. "We haven't had as much training as we would like, but we'll get that this week. The season is still early."

Fifteen schools competed in the open meet, where players compete individually and there is no team score kept. Some other teams competing were American University, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

The Bobcats, who are ranked 30th in the Amateur Wrestling News Poll, will face American this Sunday in Washington, D.C., in their first dual meet of the season.
