Bobcats lose game, dream

TOLEDO - The dream began back on Dec. 4 in Syracuse, N.Y. It was on that date Ohio defeated a ranked Syracuse team to make its dream materialize, namely that a Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship was indeed possible following a 5-21 season the year before.

It was indeed possible that Ohio could be the team cutting down the nets at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo as MAC champs on its way to the NCAA Tournament.

U.S. quarter gets new look in all states

Resembling video game tokens or Canadian currency, the new U.S. quarter--dollars are debuting to mixed review in Athens.

"It looks kinda hokey, kinda like a carnival or a skee ball token," junior Aaron Bitters said. "I think they could have come up with something a little more artistic."

Replacing the familiar American bald eagle is a depiction of Caesar Rodney on horseback.

Ping recalls youth at Alcatraz

For Charles J. Ping, home has taken many forms.

The professor emeritus, trustee professor of philosophy and education and former president of Ohio University has called many places home, from Alma College in Michigan, where he served as a professor of philosophy from 1958 through 1966, to Southern Africa, where he completed a Fulbright scholarship in 1995.

Report: U.S. sent spies

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. intelligence agents operating under the guise of U.N. arms control inspectors spied on the Iraq military for three years, The Washington Post reported yesterday.

Citing unidentified government employees and documents, the newspaper said the U.N. Special Commission was not aware it had been infiltrated by U.S. spies and did not authorize or benefit from the operation.

Computing to speed up

Ohio University's Communication Network Services wants to improve off-campus computing speeds.

Off-campus residents must use modems to connect to the Internet instead of the Ethernet connections available in the residence halls. Some modems are up to 200 times slower than Ethernet connections and they are more prone to busy signals, said Tom Reid, director of CNS.

    TOLEDO - It teased with its talent, threw you into a frenzy with an early-season victory against Syracuse and lately a two-game run over Akron and Toledo that got it to the semi-finals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament last night.

    But in the end, that is all it did.

    The Ohio club hockey team opens play tonight against host Delaware in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I Tournament in Newark, Del.

    No. 4 Ohio (18-9-3), ACHA Champions in1995, 1996 and 1997, will be challenged in its quest to play in its fifth straight finals.

    TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Damon Frierson scored 13 of Miami of Ohio's last 21 points, including five in overtime as Miami held off Bowling Green 60-56 last night in a Mid-American Conference tournament semifinal.

    The RedHawks (22-6), the tournament's top seed, advance to meet Kent in tonight's championship game at SeaGate Centre.

    Miami's Wally Szczerbiak, the MAC's player of the year, was held to a season-low 16 points before fouling out with 1:17 left in overtime.

    Frierson, however, took over.
