Athens hosts Celtic music ensemble
by Cass Wright THE POST
Traditional music fans in Athens may have the urge to get up and dance a jig tomorrow night.
Celtic music ensemble Hesperus along with guest fiddler Bonnie Rideout will perform for Ohio University students, faculty and staff tomorrow night. The concert is part of the Performing Arts Series.
The group, which will perform with different musical instruments, including harps, fiddles, and lutes, will be joined by three-time United States Scottish fiddle champion, Rideout for tomorrow night's show.
Rideout has won recognition across the Atlantic, in both North America and Europe.
Hesperus was founded in 1979 and has toured both nationally
and internationally. Most recently, the ensemble played for the President and Mrs. Clinton's State Department dinner.
The group specializes in traditional music of different periods
and people.
At the performance tomorrow, the two will combine to play popular tunes such as Soldier's Joy, Haste to the Wedding, and Rickett's Hornpipe.
"We decided on the group and Rideout because Celtic music is having such a big comeback," said Rita Bannan, marketing and promotions director for the Performing Arts Series.
Tickets for the show are $10, $7 for seniors and $5 for students and are available at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium Box Office from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The performance is at 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 2 S. College St. For additional information, call 740-593-1780.
