Golf chasing first MAC win

Cloudy skies may seem like a bad omen, especially in golf.

But for the Ohio women's golf team, 50 degrees and rain might be an advantage Sunday as the team begins the three day Mid-American Conference Championship at Kings Island Golf Center's Grizzley course in Mason.

"We have a tendency to play well in the rain," Ohio's Heather Fueger said. "It could be our saving grace. We don't have a problem with it at all."

The team heads into the championship off pace from their scores from the fall, but Ohio head coach Nicole Hollingsworth doesn't think that fact will hold the team back.

Hollingsworth said the difference could be because of many things, including the poor weather conditions. Julie Harter said she thinks scores are higher because the golfers are rusty after having the winter off.

"Coming into the fall we have played in maybe seven tournaments and are practicing every day," she said. "We've also spent the whole summer with our pros."

Slumping this spring, Julee Sovesky, who Hollingsworth said will be a pivotal component to an Ohio victory this weekend, headed home this week seeking advice from her own pro.

"Julee needs something right now," Hollingsworth said. "Seeing her pro hopefully will help her find what might be missing."

The golf courses the team has played on this spring may be another reason for the higher scores. Trips to Dallas, Myrtle Beach and Indiana top the list of difficult courses the team has seen this season.

As far as the upcoming MAC Championship goes, the course at Kings Island is not looking quite as bad.

"I would say that this is a medium course," said Fueger. "It is not as tough as Myrtle Beach or IU."

Ohio is confident that they can finally put all their games together this weekend and bring back their first MAC Championship.

"Including the fall, we've had a really good year and this would be the icing on the cake," Fueger said. "We need to forget about the rest of the year and focus on what we have going right now."
