Track seeks Southern Cup

THE POST

It's a traditional meet. The Ohio, Miami and Cincinnati track and field teams face each other every spring on the track, with the location of the meet rotating among the three. This year, in Oxford, the three schools will see a couple of new traditions begin, said Elmore Banton, Ohio's head track and field coach.

First, the meet has been named the Southern Cup Championship and the winning school's name will be engraved on a cup. The men's and women's points will be combined to determine who keeps the cup each year.

The other addition to this year's meet is the mini-heptathlon. Katie Geib will enter the event for Ohio. While the meet will be different this year, the competitors will be familiar to the Bobcats. In their four meets this spring, they have faced either the Bearcats or RedHawks in three of them. The results of those competitions have been mixed.

Ohio suffered a one-point dual meet loss at the hands of Cincinnati in the first meet of the season, but then came from behind to beat the Bearcats in the McDonald's Invitational at Ohio. Saturday, the two will have to work together to prevent Miami from dominating like it did last weekend in the Miami Invitational, when the RedHawks scored 283 points. The Bobcats were second with 138. Banton said the score this weekend should be much closer.

The first event, the hammer throw, starts at 12:30 p.m. The majority of the events will begin at 2 p.m.
