The Controls
One Hundred sets a place for The Controls. The music is lyrical, raw and has a good beat. Can you ask for more?
The Manhattan duo, comprised of Mike Delaney, also known as Dub-L and Ann Colville, has created a compelling, slightly surreal debut album.
It could best be compared to the music of Portishead, and though you could say you've heard The Control's music elsewhere, you're hooked.
Colville's winding vocals create visual images, mixed in with blisteringly sweet violin and viola, all in a weird minor key. One Hundred is beautiful ear candy.
The lyrics, based on Nostradamus's predictions, are both bleak and cryptic. The beauty of the music is its low key approach.
Everyone, it seems, has been seduced by The Controls. Not only have they recently signed on to the Sm:)le label, they have also signed on to a worldwide publishing and production deal with RZA of Wu-Tang Clan.
