The John Houk Memorial Research Grant Awards Committee did not use improper lobbying or discussions when determining grant recipients, said Carol Blum, interim vice president for research and graduate studies.

At last night's Ohio University Graduate Student Senate meeting, Blum said the committee acted with honorable intentions.

Since the end of Winter Quarter, members voiced concerns about the committee's review of applications, the arrangement of meeting times and communication and failure to follow procedures.

Blum headed the investigation and presented a detailed report stating all findings on the accusations and recommendations for improvement.

Applicants submitted two appeals for review.

GSS President Ann Charles Watts drafted operating procedures for the GSS executives and Houk committee members. The rules will guide the Spring Quarter review and Blum will attend and observe Houk meetings.

GSS also will place book drops around campus to assist students with disabilities, GSS Vice President Jim Crawford said.

The library already had a meeting and plans to have one bookdrop in place by Fall Quarter, he said.

In other business, GSS voted down a resolution to sanction Secretary Lynn Silverstein.

The resolution would have suspended Silverstein's voting privileges and prevented her from attending the last two meetings of the year.

The "To Strive For Justice and Peace Among All People and Respect the Dignity of Every Human Being" resolution was written because of an incident that occurred at the April 11 GSS meeting. Silverstein, according to the resolution, personally attacked the president by raising her voice, shouting profanities, throwing a writing utensil, storming out of the room and slamming the door behind her.

Crawford said everyone is passionate, but there needs to be a baseline of civility.

Nominations for next year's GSS must be given to Watts by May 6. Elections are in conjunction with Student Senate May 20.

The next GSS meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 8.
