Students soon might be able to view their professors' class evaluations on-line, said Shannon Bibbee, vice president of Ohio University Student Senate.

Samantha Dean, academic affairs commissioner, and Bibbee met with Provost Sharon Brehm Monday to discuss the possibility of placing professor evaluations on-line.

The senate suggested making a standardized evaluation on-line for all departments to use, Dean said.

Bibbee said if professor evaluations become available on-line, it will be the first time students would be able to view professor evaluations at OU in any form.

The senate has discussed and researched the idea of on-line evaluations in order to present a strong proposal to Faculty Senate, Bibbee said.

This research included checking how other schools, such as the University of Kentucky and Ohio State University, handle evaluations, he said.

UK publishes its professor evaluations on-line, and OSU prints a booklet with results of the professor and class evaluations each quarter, Bibbee said.

The Student Senate has talked about on-line professor evaluations for several years, and it was an issue during last year's campaign, he said.

But using on-line evaluations could have its drawbacks because some students do not access the Web often, Bibbee said.

However, on-line evaluations are easier in terms of processing the information and less expensive than printing the evaluations in booklets, he said.

By the end of the school year, senate hopes to reach a consensus about the future of evaluations, Bibbee said.

OU sophomore Christy Hamilton said she thinks on-line professor evaluations would be helpful to students.

"That's most likely a good idea because most people have access to the Internet," Hamilton said.
