Firsts over for Ohio

THE POST

The Ohio lacrosse team's first season will come to an end Saturday as the Bobcats travel to Gannon (Pa.) for their last game. After Saturday, there will be no more firsts. The first game, the first season, the first win, the first loss - they are all in the past.

Seniors and co-captains Lee McCloskey and Marianne Beshara won't be back for seconds, either. The rest of the Bobcats and a few new ones will condition and lift weights three days a week and return to full practice and lifting for five weeks in the fall.

"I have a feeling I may go out and condition with them, just to stay in shape," McCloskey said. And perhaps to stay in touch."

McCloskey said she is close with her teammates and wants to keep in touch with them, but she knows it's time to move on.

Saturday's game marks the end of a very short-lived varsity career for McCloskey. After just one year of NCAA play, it's time to turn in her Ohio uniform - and her stick. The uniform is one year of McCloskey's life, but the stick represents 10.

"Knowing that this is going to be my last game is going to be tough," she said. "Hanging it all up is kind of hard for me."

The rest of the team will continue without McCloskey next year, but Beshara, her co-captain, knows they couldn't have started without her.

"She brings so much to this team," Beshara said. "I don't know how this team would have gotten started without her. She's an incredible player, an incredible leader and just a great asset for the team."

Beshara is also leaving more than one season behind. While her lacrosse career lasted as long as McCloskey's, her Ohio athletics career extends farther to include four years as a field hockey player.

"(Athletics) has had a big place in my heart and it's a big part of who I am," she said. "My role is going to change, my life is going to change, but I'll move on."

As for the Ohio team they leave behind, Beshara knows where the Bobcats are headed and said it will be interesting to track their success in the future.

"They're not going to go in any direction but straight up," she said. "It's great to know that I was a part of that beginning."
