The Ohio State women's soccer team blanked the Bobcats 3-0 last night in Columbus.
"We're a young program, and this is our first opportunity to play a team that had received some national recognition," Coach Wendy Logan said. "We were looking forward to the match-up. I thought we played well, unfortunately the scoreboard wasn't really reflective of the effort that we had." The Bobcats (1-2 overall) were able to create some opportunities early in the contest, but Ohio State (3-0-1) goalkeeper Amber Barnes was able to make "some big time saves," Logan said.
"(Their goalkeeper) kept them in the game, especially early on," she
said. "That was probably a game changing save early on, and I think if we could have capitalized, at least on that, we probably could have hung around longer than we did."
Although they failed to convert their opportunities early, the Bobcats did keep Ohio State in check in the opening minutes.
"The first 20 minutes they had us running around a little bit," Ohio State Head Coach Lori Walker said. "I was very impressed by their ability to move the ball through the midfield."
The Bobcats could only keep the Buckeyes off the board until the 27th minute, however. Then Ohio State's Lindsey Eckles out-maneuvered the Bobcat defense to score on Vanessa Dennis. Five minutes later, Emily Thorpe netted the Buckeyes' second goal of the game. The half ended 13 minutes later with the Buckeyes ahead, 2-0.
Ohio entered the second half with an adjusted defense, a result of Ohio State's attacking backs. The fact that the Bobcats have some versatile players allowed them to make the switch from a two forward offense to playing three forwards effectively, Logan said.
The adjustment kept the Buckeyes from scoring again until the final minute of the game, when confusion around the goal allowed Mia Kaetzel to get the ball to Courtney Nein. With only seconds left, Nein shot past Dennis for the Buckeyes' third goal of the game.
