Bobcats face physical Dayton

As the Ohio women's soccer team prepares to face Dayton at 3 p.m. today at the Shafer Street Field, Ohio head Coach Wendy Logan said she is nowhere near finding her top 11 players, but said she has no problem with that.

"Every game someone plays well," she said. "Last game Rachel Sanders, a freshman from the back. Megan Cummins has played very well in all the last three games. We're trying to determine where she's most effective and how our team is most effective.

" Just as we think we've found our starting lineup and our mix, someone else throws a wrench in there. But it's good; it's positive, because everyone brings something new to the team. It's just making us a deeper and adding dimension to our team."

The Bobcats (1-2) will need to use that depth and dimension against the Flyers.

"Dayton is very competitive," she said. "They will come out and play really hard. I expect it to be a physical team, not dirty, but very aggressive. They're good in the air, they will challenge every ball they're going to go for every 50-50 ball. That's the strength of their team."

In addition to the physical nature of their play, the Flyers bring a 2-1 record and a soccer tradition to the field with them. In 1996 they were the Atlantic-10 Tournament champions, and in 1998 they were the regular season conference champions.

"They have done very well in the past," Logan said. "Last year they had a real successful year, even though they lost in the final of the conference. They surprised some people last year and they've got some recognition within the region."

Dayton's tradition appears as if it will only strengthen this season, based on the performances of a few freshmen on the team, most notably Missy Gregg. Logan said.

Gregg has scored three goals this season to match Dayton's number of games played.

"She's been a real handful for all the teams they've faced this year," Logan said.

The Bobcats will not alter their game to account for Gregg, the coach said.

"We're not going to change our game," she said. "We've got players who can match up with her. We're just trying to be sharp in what we do, to attack their defense. The best we can do is really attack their defense, and we think we're capable of getting behind them."

In the teams' meeting last year at Dayton, which was the Bobcats season opener, the Flyers won 3-2 on Sept 1. Erin McCoy said this year Ohio will work on playing its game.

"We're working to keep it tight and to play our game," she said. "Everything is the same each game, we treat them all equal. A win would be awesome, but we're just trying to focus on playing our game."
