A call to the booths
THE POST

Editor,

I would like to comment on "Common Sense," (The Post, Sept. 24) titled "Focus on Community, not Greeks." I agree when Brian Coovert states that the greek community should not just focus on their own members, but the community at large. At the same time, I applaude their efforts as I think it is important that people register to vote and do vote.

I would like to add that the Ohio University College Democrats, for as long as I have been a student here and for many years before that, have worked to register as many students and community members as possible. They do not have to be democrats to register with us. We reserve tables at the College Gate, stand outside of the dining halls, and whenever possible, visit other campus organizations and encourage their members to register to vote.

I do not think that voter turnout in Athens is poor. But, it is not as high as it could be. Voting is a civic responsibility. College Democrats and other groups work to register students and community members to vote and also encourage them to go to the polls. However, it is ultimately up to the voters to educate themselves about the issues and show up to the polls.

As students, most of us will live in Athens for at least four years and the decisions made by city council will affect us. Community members should also be interested in voting so that the interests of the city are balanced with those of OU. After all, they will be here for the next 20 or 30 years, while most of us will leave in four.

I would like to add that the College Democrats will be at Shively and Jefferson Dining Halls today through Thursday, as well as at the College Gate on Friday and Monday, which is the last day to register for the fall election. If you are a new student and need to register for the first time or you have recently moved and need to change your address, please stop by.

In the next week, there are plenty of opportunities for students and community members to register. In the next month, by reading the papers and watching the local news, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about the various candidates and issues.

I urge students and community members to register and vote in the upcoming election.

Borderline harassment
THE POST

Editor,

This letter is in response to the article about the Ohio Giddeons and their activities on the Ohio University campus last Wednesday, ("Ohio Giddeon International passes God's word to students," Sept. 23). I thought this article was a fair treatment on a subject that had many students aggravated and annoyed.

It is true that these gentlemen are within their rights to be passing out religious literature, even if it does make one wonder about the separation of church and state. I myself was approached eight times while walking to and from my morning class in Scripps Hall. That would be, for the record, two of the four on the corners by the Oasis and Gordy Hall, one by Morton Hall, and one at the outlet of Race Street.

My friend was approached 12 times between our residence hall and Stocker Hall. The magnitude of this campaign crosses a line between offering information and being harassed. Before anyone feels I am offending their religion, let me say that I would feel the same way if the Men's Crew team were asking for donations in such proliferation (although my guess is that there are more little green Bibles out there than rowing machines). I respect the motivation of the Giddeons but really, how many OU students have the mental capacity at 9 a.m. to make a decision about receiving the word of God?
