Scary women abound on the internet by Chas J. Hartman THE POST
Being scared by something on the Web may seem lame, but it is surprising how many scary Web sites exist. There are sites with straight-up scary stories, elaborate virtual haunted houses and old school superstitions.
Scary Women, http://www.cinema. ucla.edu/women, is a roundtable discussion of the freakiest female monsters ever seen in American film. This is an intellectual study of scariness, which the UCLA film school organized.
The discussions at Scary Women come in both text and audio form. Audio discussions cover the freak-ay ladies in horror film classics such as Psycho and Season of the Witch.
Scary Sounds, http://www.superglobe.com/halloween.htm, is a simple take at causing goose bumps and raising the hairs on the back of your neck. This site offers a plethora of intriguing sounds that are perfect for the Halloween season. But the audio samples are primitive, playing in only the MIDI and WAV formats.
While the sound quality may not meet MP3 standards, the piano and electronic sounds are eerie enough. Where else can you find the theme songs from The Twilight Zone, Psycho, Jaws and Tales From The Crypt?
Scary Superstitions, http://members. aol.com/JuliannaA/scary.html, is for those who love witty comments that stimulate the mind. One can find common superstitions here, and there is a wide selection of really offbeat findings. For example: "All windows should be opened at the moment of death so that the soul can leave,"
Scary Superstitions offers over 100 superstitions, some of which appear in poetry form.
Scary.com, http://www.scary.com, promises viewers a great collection of Halloween games, scary stories and more. Scary.com offers a totally interactive street model complete with houses, a swamp and a graveyard.
There are the customary scary stories, with a special tale read by the "Grim Reader" on Halloween night. This freaky site must be seen to be believed.
Haunted Halloween Castle, http://user.icx.net/~camilton/index.htm, is a site catered to appease the tens of thousands who will be partying Halloween weekend in Athens. The site's design is pretty basic, but the information is important. In fact, this party castle contains one of the largest collections of '99 party ideas on the Web.
These five sites are only a brief glimpse into the fabulously freaky destinations (besides porn) on the Web.
