Ohio University Marching 110 percussionists Les Redman (left) and Nick Cortright lead the rest of the band from Alumni Gate towards the Convocation Center for the "Yell Like Hell" Homecoming pep rally. A small contingent of students were on hand for the event, prompting President Glidden to ask for a better showing of students at the game against Bowling Green Saturday afternoon.

Students who otherwise would not give Homecoming a second thought now are getting into the Homecoming spirit as members of fraternities or sororities.

"The sorority is an institution within the institution of OhioUniversity," said Laura Bracken, a freshman Alpha Gamma Delta sorority member. "And to be a part of that makes me feel that much more involved."

Throughout Homecoming week, fraternities and sororities are paired together and compete for points in various events. Tomorrow, the fraternity and sorority team with the most points will crown its Homecoming king and queen.

Sunday, fraternity and sorority members collected clothes for the Salvation Army in the first event of the week. The Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity team won the clothing drive and earned 75 points.

On Monday, the teams participated in Omega Mouth, a lip-sync competition that raised more than $700 for Big Brothers and Sisters. Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Alpha Xi Delta sorority won the event.

The fraternities and sororities also participated in a clean sweep competition. The members were in charge of cleaning different sections of Athens' streets.

"Greek life is a big believer in giving back to the community," said Scott Copley, graduate advisor for the Interfraternity Council. "Homecoming is a great way to do that."

The point system motivates the greek community to become more involved in the week by encouraging the spirit of competition, he said.

The Greek Community will have the chance to show off their hard work based on the theme "We are Family," at the Homecoming parade, tomorrow morning. The floats will be judged and the winners will be announced soon after the parade.
Intramural football games played throughout the week also give teams the chance to earn points.

In anticipation for this weekend, the greek community has spent the past few weeks preparing for the Homecoming parade. Tomorrow morning, the fraternities and sororities will present the floats they built based on the theme "We are Family."

"(Greeks) expend a lot of time, energy and money to get supplies," Copley said. "The organizations enjoy doing it because it gives them a chance to spend time with each other."

Scores for the floats are tabulated as the parade proceeds. The winners of the float competition are announced soon after.

"Otherwise, all I would do is go to the game," said Emily Hughes, freshman Alpha Delta Pi sorority member. "But now I'm going to the parade and I'll be part of the float."
