Put food to use
Editor,
Last year just before Fall Quarter ended, Hurricane Mitch wasted Honduras, Nicaragua and some surrounding areas. Also, this was the first quarter that micro-fridges were in OU Campus residence halls. When everyone left for winter break there was a lot of food tossed out into the trash. What a wasted opportunity to recover food for the Hurricane Relief effort that was underway.
Well, were at that time of Fall Quarter again and this time we dont want to miss out on a prime opportunity. So, from Wednesday to Nov. 24, Campus Recycling will set up a location in all the central ground floor lobbies of all the forty residence halls to collect food. When you are gong through your winter break move-out checklist please put all the unopened non-perishable food you plan on getting rid of in the food collection spot instead of in the dumpster. The food will go to Hurricane Relief as well as local organizations that will distribute this food to people in need. Imagine if all 7,000 residence hall residents put food out. There would a boatload of food going to help people instead of taking up space at the landfill. Imagine the pile of food that would be. Check with your residence life staff or campus recycling for more info.
While your at it, you might as well recycle and put any reusables your are getting rid of in the recycling area of your building instead of throwing that away too.
Seventy percent of the trash that OU gets rid of comes from the residence and dining hall part of campus. Thats only forty buildings out of 190 generating most of the trash. There is the most potential for waste reduction right where you live on campus. Please help do your part and help divert resources back into economy to be made into new products instead of digging and cutting up more of our valuable global home for short term material gain. It helps maintain the integrity of the environment in which we live while helping to increase the health of our economy as well.
Have a great break!

A Strike for students
Editor,
In recent Letters to the Editor, the authors have told how praiseworthy Ohio University students were for their help with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
I would like to add another to this list: the Alpha Phi Omega students who bowl in the ATCO bowling league at Baker Center. The combination of OU students and people with disabilities make up our eight teams. We have three leagues a year to correspond with each of the three quarters. The league runs with the same rules as sanctioned leagues.
These students are so devoted. They will come to me and apologize if they have to take a class the following quarter at the same time the league bowls. One graduated student now employed in Athens for the past two years still comes to bowl in the league. Talk about being devoted - these students are tops!
