Emblem reflects sordid past
While Mississippi was the 20th state to join the union, it is the
last to move into the 21st century.
Residents of the state voted Tuesday to keep their state flag - the
last to display the Confederate emblem prominently. For many, this emblem
invokes feelings of racism and is a throwback to the days of slavery and
the Civil War.
Mississippi should have taken a cue from Georgia, which shrunk the
emblem and placed it at the bottom with other historical versions of the
flag, and from South Carolina, which no longer flies the Confederate flag
at the state capitol. It is the sign of the times - items that were
acceptable 150 years ago aren't acceptable now.
Mississippi flag-backers say it holds historical value. If this is
the case, the flag should be placed in a museum for exhibit. It should
not be displayed on state property because people look to it as a symbol
of their beliefs.
And if someone really wants to hang the flag, they should do so on
their own property. The state cannot prevent the flag from flying. Instead,
it can and should create a new flag that is acceptable to all of its citizens.
Advice for student senators
With Ohio University Student Senate elections coming next month,
The Post has some tips for the would-be senators. These elections are
important and should be taken seriously. They affect the whole student
body, and senate has the potential to get some things accomplished if
it comes together as a collective body.
n Do not be afraid to stand up to the university. If you do not agree
with something the administration is doing, tell them. You represent the
students first and foremost, not the university.
n Create a party of people who are dedicated. Senators need to understand
the importance of time management while being both a student and a senator.
n Make sure you have an attainable year-long plan. Have clear goals that
you want to accomplish.
n Get involved by attending every student group's meeting at least once.
Being visible on campus is more than just standing at College Gate and
passing out fliers.
n Be good ambassadors - both for the university and the student body.
Represent the student body in a professional manner in the Athens and
university communities.
n Combine your efforts with the Graduate Student Senate. Show them how
it is done.
n Encourage people to vote. The only way a true democracy can work is
if people take the time to voice their opinions.
