An Ohio University student organization is raising money to help the victims of a devastating earthquake in India last month.

The Indian Student Association started raising money two weeks ago to help people get the supplies they need to recover, said Anshuman Taneja, a representative of the group’s international association. The organization already has raised about $1,000.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Gujarat, India, on Jan. 26, killing about 30,000 people and destroying nearby towns and cities, according to an Associated Press article.

The organization will set up a table for donations on Court Street this week, the last week the association will collect money, Taneja said.

"A lot of people in ISA knew people in India, but we we’re all fortunate to have nothing happen to them," he said. "We are just trying to do anything we can for our fellow countrymen."

Readers wishing to make a donation can either visit the group Uptown or contact Taneja via e-mail at Taneja@bobcat.ent.ohiou.edu.

Students also can go directly to (http://www.timesofindia.com), an Indian newspaper’s Web site, to make donations.
