Nameless Bentley addition gives arts and sciences identity

Classical music wafted from Walter Hawthorne's office along the curved fifth-floor corridors of the Bentley Hall annex, a $20 million building squeezed in next to its older brother as the centerpiece of the university's West Green entrance.

The African history professor was one of the first occupants of the modern office building. He was glad to have a permanent place away from the dungeonlike basement of Bentley Hall, the history department's former headquarters.

"So far the building is fantastic,"he said. "It's nice because we have two conference rooms, a kitchen and offices for the (teaching assistants)."
