Swimmer Claire Madonia will return with the top time in the butterfly for the Ohio swimming and diving team next year.

"Claire had a dream season this past year," Head Coach Greg Werner said. "She dropped her times and has become more confident and experienced."

Madonia finished second and third in two events this year at the Mid-American Conference Championships. She said she hopes to do even better next year.

"I want to go back and win the MAC next year," Madonia said. "I also hope to make the NCAAs."

Werner said Madonia peaked during her junior year and is going into her senior season as the top butterflier for the swimming and diving team. Her top events are the 100-meter and 200 butterfly. She also competes in the 200 individual medley.

Captain Jill Schumacher said she expects Madonia to have a good year next year. She said Madonia came through for the team in the regular season as well as in MACs.

"Claire was awesome in the MACs," Schumacher said. "She shows that hard work pays off and is an example for other team members."

Werner said he expects Madonia to continue maturing in and out of the pool next year. She will be a team leader and continue to develop.

"I just want to continue having as much fun as we did this year," Madonia said. "I believe we could also win the MAC."

Schumacher said Madonia is a hard worker. She said if Madonia continues her hard work and dedication she will contribute greatly to the team next year.

"Claire has the potential of winning events at conference next year," Schumacher said. "She has become consistently better over the past three years and there is no reason why that won't continue into next season."

Madonia received the Fletcher Gildereds Memorial Award for most improved swimmer this year. Werner said he is amazed by what Madonia has been able to do. Swimmers usually peak early in their careers, but Madonia continues to improve. Madonia will be staying in Athens this summer to train for next season. She also attended the Olympic time trial. Schumacher said it is great that Madonia continues to compete.

"If Claire keeps working as hard as she is, she will be absolutely amazing next year," Schumacher said.
