Cincinnati band brings unique sound to Athens

Heavy Weather is coming to Athens this weekend, but local forecasts won't mention a thing about it. The Cincinnati-area band plays at Saturday at Mama Einstein's, 55 N. Court St.

Founded by siblings Chris and Carole Walker, Heavy Weather has been bringing its self-described "funky rock soul music" to audiences across the East Coast for almost nine years. In the process, it has built a devoted fan base and shared the stage with acts such as The Jerry Garcia Band, Marcy Playground and Fishbone.

So how does a band like Heavy Weather, which doesn't have backing from a record company, become so successful? Bassist Chris Walker said he keeps fans informed by sending them concert dates each month.

"But the best form of advertisement is word of mouth," he said.

Heavy Weather must have quite a few people talking. The band averages between 150 to 200 shows per year. Weather has been touring a little less this year, however. They have been busy recording tracks for their fourth album that is due for release this fall.

Despite the band's success in other parts of the country, lead vocalist Carole Walker said she always enjoys performing in Athens.

"Athens has always been real friendly to us," she said, "And it's one of the only markets where you don't hear people shouting, 'play some Skynyrd.'"

Throughout its history, Heavy Weather has endured a number of different incarnations, consisting of as few as four people and as many as eight. Saturday's performance will showcase the fourth and most recent Heavy Weather lineup.

In addition to the Walker siblings, this lineup features seven-string guitarist John Gentry, saxophone player/percussionist Danny Sauers and drummer Tim Hensley.

Chris Walker said that the band uses the diverse musical influences of its members to create a sound all its own.

"We try to play music that is unique and different, but has a familiar ring to it," he said.

Fellow Queen City act Nu Porno Nation will open Saturday's show. Nation is composed of Heavy Weather members Gentry and Hensley, as well as Ray's Music Exchange members Brad Myers and Nick Blasky.

The band plays a mixture of Ray's material and cover songs. Those not familiar with Nation can expect to see mind blowing musicianship, Gentry said.

Heavy Weather and Nu Porno Nation start at 10 p.m Saturday at Mama Einstein's. Admission is $4 for those older than 21 and $6 for those under 21. Check out Heavy Weather on the Web at http://heavyweather.iuma.com.
