Men, women capture wins
The Ohio men's basketball team added a second exhibition
victory to its preseason portfolio with a 96-80 win against Premier All-Stars
at The Convo on Sunday.
Forward Jon Sanderson paced the Bobcats with 28 points including 5-of-8
shooting from behind the three-point arc. Steve Esterkamp added 20 points
while hitting 4-of-5 on threes. Brandon Hunter once again posted a double-double,
this time with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Jones was the fourth
Bobcat to score in double figures, netting 14 points.
The Bobcats trailed 8-4 early in the contest, but used a 26-9 run to
build a 13-point lead with seven minutes left in the first half, 30-17.
Ohio carried a 41-30 advantage into halftime despite shooting just 38
percent from the field.
In the second half, Ohio turned its shooting around to hit 50 percent
from the field. The team scored 13-of-29 (.448) three-point attempts in
the game, eight coming in the second half.
Ohio will have a Green & White scrimmage at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The
Convo. The Bobcats open the regular season with Rio Grande at 7 p.m.
Nov. 22.
**Women win again
Forward Lori Moorman scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and
forward Beckie Fischer added 19 points to lead Ohio to an 87-74 victory
over the OGBM Legends in the final exhibition game of the preseason.
The contest featured a top-notch shooting display in the opening
period. The teams combined to hit nearly two-thirds (37-of-56) of their
shots in the opening stanza as Ohio opened a 48-42 lead. The Bobcats connected
on 61.3 percent from the floor (19-of-31), but allowed the Legends to
make 72 percent (18-of-25). In the second half, however, Ohio turned up
the defensive pressure, limiting OGBM to just 33.3 percent shooting.
Cathy Szall added 18 points, and Jacquie Negrelli chipped in 13 points
and a team-best five assists.
The Bobcats used seven-straight points midway through the second
half to break open a 62-61 margin. They stretched the lead to 11, 77-66
with 5:14 to play. The final margin of 13 equaled the largest margin for
either team.
The Bobcats open the regular-season at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at Evansville.
