PROGRESS REPORT
PASS - Ohio University's Alden Library gets a passing grade in our book
for the new on-call system. It allows library patrons to page library
employees in order for them to respond to questions. The sixth and seventh
floors of the library, the general stacks, are scary enough so
turning on some lights could not hurt. Adding additional lounges on top
floors as well as the proposed coffee shop will make a nice area for library
patrons to take a study break.
PASS - ReUse Industries, a non-profit Reuse center in Albany sponsored
a festival promoting reusing and recycling as a way to protect our environment
and create jobs for people living in Southeast Ohio. Recycling and saving
the environment are important issues both on and off-campus. Students
have HOMEWORK too. With the help of university apartments facilitating
bins, students living off-campus need to make the extra effort to recycle.
FAIL - Ads, promoting Yahoo! messenger and Yahoo! mail were designed
to target college students. They did not just get into The Post - but
other college newspapers all around the country. Yahoo! needs to take
a women's studies course and find a better way to get college students'
attention, rather than offensive ads. This kind of advertising campaign
does not say much for the credibility of Yahoo!. College newspapers that
did pull the ad did the right thing in not letting this promotion go too
far.
PASS - The members of OU's Marching 110 certainly have reasons to toot
their own horns because they will be marching in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving
Day Parade. The band had to apply to participate in the parade. The band
members have worked hard and this is a great way to represent the university.
OU Athletics Department also gets applause for donating money for the
trip.
FAIL - Columbus finally has a NHL team. The Columbus Blue Jackets opened
their season Saturday night with a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.
The team skated off the ice to a standing ovation despite the two-points
loss.
PASS - The Ohio football team picked up its first Mid-American Conference
win 42-20 against the Buffalo Bulls, while the Ohio volleyball team upped
its MAC record to 6-0.
