Letters to the sports editor

Editor,

As an Ohio senior, and a fan of Ohio football, I was excited to hear that Ohio had defeated Big Ten power Minnesota this past weekend. Without question this win, as well as Western Michigan's win at Iowa and Toledo's slaying of Penn State two weeks ago, will create a buzz amongst the college football scene about the resurgence of the Mid American Conference and its recent ability to compete against teams from elite conferences. Finally, after years of success against the nation's best in basketball, MAC football is beginning to turn some heads. And I couldn't be happier for Ohio and the football program. Now, however, is the real test for Ohio and its players. After such a huge win, how will Ohio perform this weekend at home against Tennessee Tech, a team with far less talent than Minnesota? Surely, Ohio should win the game. It has superior athletes and is playing at home. But psychologically, will the Bobcats be up for the game or will they, as many teams do after a big win, play lackadaisically and with complacency? Coming from Upstate New York and as a lifelong Syracuse Orangemen faithful, I cannot even begin to count how many times SU would earn a potential season-changing win early in the season, only to suffer a season-changing loss the following week against a sub-par team.  I don't want this theme to carry over to our school. Ohio has an opportunity to make some ripples this year. In terms of talent, Minnesota might arguably be our toughest opponent all year. Does that mean we'll go 12-1? We could, if we play with the same kind of intensity in every play of every game – whether it be against Tennessee Tech or Marshall. Let's hope our team can stay focused and remain thirsty for every game, no matter the opponent. No let downs! Go Bobcats!

Editor,

As an alumnus who went to school at OU in the mid ’80s, when the football team wasn't even worth considering, I find it appalling that the Bobcats’ win over Minnesota was not front page news. Since coach (Jim) Grobe arrived at OU the football team has gotten progressively better. They are a hard working, great bunch of young men who deserve more recognition from their school newspaper.

I am not saying that the firing of Bob Knight is not big sports news. It is definitely worthy of front-page status. But, a school newspaper ought to put its own team first, before an AP report, especially when the win was as significant as Saturday's.

To coach Grobe and the players I say a big Congratulations, and thank you. You are at least making the alumni proud to be Cats. Keep up the great work.
