Looking for a way to relax, relieve tension and clear your mind? Try a massage.

Diane Stromp founded Therapeutic Touch, 3 W. Stimpson Ave., 10-and-a-half-years ago. She offers Swedish and corrective tissue massages.

"Most patients get massages to relieve a condition such as hip pain or back pain," Stromp said.

Prices range from $40 for an hour-long massage and $25 for a half-hour massage.

Mary Coté, an Athens-based licensed massage therapist who has been practicing for two years, performs full-body Swedish massages and shiatsu, a Japanese form of bodywork based on acupuncture, from her home.

"People are attracted to my massages for stress relief mostly," Cote said. "They are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle."

Ohio University senior Julia Booth tried one of Cote's massages by using a friend's gift certificate.

"I really enjoyed it," said Booth, "I would do it again if I had the money."

Cote charges $35 for an hour massage and $25 for half-an-hour massages.

Janet Ammon, of Albany, is another licensed massage therapist who works out of her home. Most of her massages, however, are performed at her client's houses.

She offers deep tissue and Swedish massages. She also offers sports massages, otherwise known as lymph and muscle flushes. These massages help release toxins in the muscles, which build up as a result of constant workouts, Ammon said.

"Some people just want a light, relaxing massage," she said. "I like to cater to the person's desires and needs."

OU junior Alison Miller has had multiple massages from Ammon.

"(Ammon) is really good. I'd recommend her to anybody," Miller said. "She is very affordable for college students."

Ammon's prices range from $25 to $40 for an hour-long massage.

Licensed massage therapist Linda Swart has worked at Athens Body Therapy, 94 Columbus Road, for three years. She offers Swedish massages with scented, essential therapeutic oils for relaxation and pain relief.

"Therapeutic massages are beneficial to all systems of the body," Swart said. "They improve respiration, circulation and digestion. They also reduce blood pressure, tension and insomnia."

Raphael's Aveda Concept Salon, 18 S. Court St., also offers massage therapy. Massages cost $50 an hour.
