Graduate Student Senate is considering developing a university-wide academic honor code for students in response to recent investigations into plagiarism at Ohio University.
“It seems that rather than having the faculty deal with an honor code for students, it would be an appropriate subject for (Graduate and Student Senates) to talk about,” said
Michael Mumper, associate provost of graduate studies. “We hope that (the senates) would investigate and decide what kind of honor code they would think appropriate.”
An ad-hoc committee of administrators, faculty and students will consider the academic honesty policies of other universities in developing a solution for OU, Mumper said.
Senate also pledged to endorse one of three alternative student insurance plans at its next meeting instead of endorsing the current plan, which expires in September.
Student Health Services will take student concerns and input in making the final decision this fall, said Mark Mecum, senate president.
In the current plan, domestic students have the option to choose OU’s $810 insurance plan whereas international students are required to buy a $1,209 plan.
The first alternative plan would blend the two plans and charge all students $943, increasing the quality for domestic students but decreasing the quality for international students, Mecum said.
The second plan would charge domestic students $876 and maintain the current price of the international plan. A third alternative, similar to the first, would charge all students $1,035 but offer more options and better quality, Mecum said.
Also at the meeting, senate passed a resolution prioritizing the goals of a Vision Ohio document geared toward graduate students. Lowering graduate student fees is the most important goal whereas increasing student stipends is the second, according to the resolution.
