Students mill about the food court in search of lunch yesterday. The food court provides many options for hungry students with everything from burritos to pizza.

Ohio University is a far cry from Bayside High School, but visitors to the new Baker UniveCenter soon could have the chance to eat at The Max.

The Saved by the Bell cafeteria’s name is one of more than 1,900 entries suggested by students for the name of the center’s food court.

“It was just phenomenal, the amount of ideas that came out,” said Gail Houlette, the Classified Senate chair.

When the winning name is revealed at the center’s grand opening Feb. 10, the student who submitted it will win a $250 gift card to Baker Center, said Emily Howard, marketing manager for Housing and Food Service.

Along with the gift card, the student will “create history and make their mark on this new addition to campus,” Howard said.

A Dining Services committee chose 10 names, which were then submitted to a committee made up of the chairs of administrative, student, classified, faculty and graduate student senates, Howard said. This committee made the final decision.

“The one that won was heads and arms above the rest for creativity,” said Dominic Barbato, Graduate Student Senate president.

Creativity and a connection to the campus were the main criteria for selection, Howard said, adding that students listed explanations along with their suggestions.

“They may have a really obscure name … but, when we read the reasons why, they had some good explanations,” Howard said.

Dining Services removed suggestions that were copyrighted or offensive, Howard said.

Although she was impressed with all the submissions, Houlette said the winning entry immediately stood out.

“I think when you see what the name is, you’ll see why we chose it,” she said.

Students have helped choose other names at the university recently as they were able to vote on the Internet for the name of the new bobcat mascot. Students elected the name Rufus to go along with a new costume for the mascot.
