Can you feel it? Change is in the air. Ohio University Student Senate is working for all students. We are involved and are taking the offense. As a senator at-large, I have been busy at work:
• Debating and voting against support for the $25 residence hall Halloween fee because of the administration’s lack of student involvement on the decision.
• Speaking at the City Council meeting against the installment of a fence on Halloween weekend.
• Attending Winter Quarter’s Town Hall meeting and organizing a protest against the decision to cut four varsity sports.
• Authoring and passing a resolution denouncing the decision to cut the four athletic programs and demanding a formal response from Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt.
• Chairing a special committee with members of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Student Senate, varsity sports and the administration to investigate the athletic cuts decision.
• Serving with several student senators on a committee investigating the effects a transition to a semester system would have on students.
Our student senators work hard and invest many hours communicating with entities around the campus to ensure students’ voices are accurately heard. I ask all OU students to please work with us so we can advocate for you. Together we make change happen.
We must seek the actuality of change. Change will occur when the students, as a unit, voice our collective displeasure and offer viable changes to university policy. Be your own advocate. Help the Student Senate move into another era. We can do it together.Matt Bell is a senator at-large
